Not so united over chairs.

Canada's bid for a rotating seat on the United Nations Security Council has ended with a humiliating withdrawal.

And in a statement to the world's media, a spokesman has revealed that the Canadian representives are baffled by the affair.

"We just don't understand this. Look, a rotating chair is surely more practical than a fixed one?

"When you want to talk to someone to the side of you, rather than twisting your neck or upper body - leaving yourself open to muscular strain - you can just rotate in your chair.

"This decision by the Security Council is completely baffling. Maybe it's a cost issue, but surely a few chairs can't be beyond some of the richest nations in the world?"

A source inside the Security Council. "Canucks! Whatcha gonna do?"
