Gretta Brette Studies Proposals

Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced that installation artist Christo and his partner Jeanne-Claude have been awarded the commission to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall based on the results of an international design competition.

Christo is known for his plans for large scale installations such as wrapping the Empire State Building and the Reichstag here in Berlin as well as the "The Gates" installation of 7,500 saffron coloured fabric panel gates in Central Park in New York lining 23 miles of pedestrian paths.

Christo says his winning proposal is based on "Rebuilding the Berlin wall to its original height along the full length of its' original location using abandoned Lexmark bubble-jet printers stacked up like bricks."

"This project represents the transition from planned obsolescence in today's technologically driven culture towards unplanned adaptive reuse."

Merkel anticipates work to begin right away, "Research submitted with Christo's proposal shows that there is an ample supply of discarded Lexmark printers worldwide which have been overloading landfill sites and are available at little or no cost due to the high cost and relatively low capacity of replacement ink cartridges."

Other current large scale projects by Christo include a plan to cover a portion of the Arkansas River in Colorado with a fabric panel roof for several miles.
