image for Whaling Committee apologises to Israel after linguistic mix up
80% of whales 'don't feel threatened by Israel'

The president of the World Whaling Committee has today issued a full apology to the nation of Israel after an 'unfortunate misunderstanding' led to Israel being kicked off the list of WWC member nations.

The incident occurred at the recent annual WWC convention in Alaska, when a member of the WWC's undercover surveillance team reportedly overheard a conversation between an Israeli delegate and a Moroccan delegate in which the Israeli delegate appeared to be boasting of his country's 'long and rich tradition of cultural whaling'. Israel was summarily dismissed from the convention and their membership of the WWC revoked indefinitely.

During the subsequent investigation it became clear that the Israeli delegate was in fact referring to the great Wailing Wall, a holy historic site in Jerusalem where Jews have congregated to pray for hundreds of years.

A spokesman for the WWC explained 'when we heard rumours that Israel had was boasting about secret whaling activity we took what we thought was appropriate action. On reflection we should have checked our sources better, you don't get many whales in the Mediterranean'.

Speaking after he had been invited back into the convention, the Israeli delegate said that the misunderstanding had not marred his enjoyment of the event. 'I've had a whale of time,' he added wrly.

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
