image for Saddam Hussein Offered Exile by Nigerian President
A welcoming crowd at Calabar awaiting the arrival of Saddam Hussein from a US Navy carrier off-shore Nigeria, in the Gulf of Guinea.

Following fervent pleas for clemency on behalf of Sadam Hussein by eminent personalities and statesmen worldwide, Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasanjo, himself, a former military dictator, offered to provide sanctuary to Saddam Hussein in the future tourist paradise city of Calabar in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

It will be recalled that the Nigerian president, popularly called "Baba" by his official praise singers and ego massagers, provided VIP exile facilities and other hospitality services for deposed Liberian warlord-turned democratic president, Charles Taylor, a qualified Baptist pastor.

In a letter to the US President, sent through US Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleeza Rice, after an eyebrow-raising whistle stop at Abuja, the Nigerian capital, in the dead of the night on Friday, 29 December 2007, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo begged for mercy to be granted to Saddam Husein, since his execution could open up a Pandora's Box for former military despots in Africa, particularly those around the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea environment of the West Africa sub-region.
