East Antarctica-- Russian scientists drilling into the frozen Lake Vostok may have just made the most disgusting discovery in the history of science. The Russians succeeded drilling into Lake Vostok on February 5th, and expected to find pristine conditions. Instead, a geyser of raw sewage erupted, turning the blue Antarctic landscape into a sea of brown filth.
Lake Vostok has been isolated from the world for almost 15 million years. Scientists from around the world were hoping to discover new forms of life in the virgin waters--no one expected sewage.
No one seems to know where the sewage is coming from--or how to stop it. The brown sewage covers almost one-quarter of the Frozen Continent and it is expected to grow. The stench from the site is the biggest problem now.
"We expect that the entire Southern Hemisphere will have to be evacuated. The smell is incredibly bad." said the Russian lead scientist.
"Whenever we flush a toilet, the sewage doesn't just disapeer, it goes somewhere. It looks like human waste has been collecting in Lake Vostok for about a century. Now, it's payback time." he said.
