In 1974 Second Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, a former Japanese army intelligence officer who fought in World War II, emerged from the jungle having spent almost thirty years holding out in the Philippines.
At the time this story captured the world's imagination... until now.
Residents living outside Chicago told The Spoof that they had awoken to hear the noise of an aircraft, and were amazed to see an American B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, the 'Liberty Belle' appear out of nowhere and crash in a field.
All seven crew escaped uninjured. Pilot Captain Micky 'Deadly' Haggard, now 104 years old, said they had taken refuge in clouds around about May 1944, and had just 'flown around a bit' to hide from Japanese Zero fighters.
"We ran out of fuel," 'Deadly' explained. "I can't wait to go for a cold beer and listen to some of that new-fangled Swing music."
