image for Michael Steele Apologizes for Offending Republican Leaders
Mike Huckabee

Republican Committee Chairman Michael Steele issued an apology today for insulting nearly all of the leading voices of the Republican Party.

When asked to comment on Mitt Romney, Steele said, "He's a Mormon, and it's clear that we don't vote for Mormons in the South, which is really the stronghold of our party. Mormons stand the best chance in the Democratic Party. Just look at Harry Reid. He's a Mormon and none of the Democrats seem to care. It's just too bad for Romney that the Mormon Faith is so aligned with the principles of conservatism."

In response to a question about the future of Sarah Palin, Steele replied, "I think she's really pretty. It's just too bad that she did so poorly on interviews. She needs to learn to control herself a bit better so that she doesn't say things she later regrets. I think I'm a good model for her to follow."

When asked about whether Mike Huckabee has a chance in 2012, Steele remarked, "He's really good on radio. He could probably be a televangelist too if he wanted. I'd stick to that if I were him."

His final swipe was for Bobby Jindal who is often seen as a rising star in the party. "He's not white and he's not considered a "minority" because he's not black or Hispanic either. I'm not sure that there is room for people to run for President that are not easily categorized by race, like immigrants from India and other parts of southeast Asia. He kind of looks Hispanic. Maybe we could teach him Spanish."

A firestorm of controversy has followed his remarks, with people across the party calling for his resignation. In response, his RNC spokesperson said, "Chairman Steele is sorry for the way his remarks were interpreted. He truly does believe that Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, and Bobby Jindal are important to the future of the Republican Party."
