London bobbies not really knowing what to do

There have been increasing complaints by Londoners and tourists alike about the quality of people being employed as Police constables.

Many negative comments have been made about how some of these people graduate from basic training to being in positions of responsibility.

An American tourist said she asked one Bobbie for directions to the Tower of London and was greeted with "Tower of what?" Another tourist sought help in finding the way to Westminster Abbey and was told she should go to Manchester to find that one.

The Minister for Police Mr Vernon Dolittle refused to comment on the issue except to say that he has always found his "troops" very professional at all times. Obviously he hasn't heard Mr Derek Willis' story about the London Bobbie who issued a ticket to him for walking on the wrong side of the pavement.

"These fellows are incompetent beyond belief and shouldn't be allowed to continue wearing the uniform" Mr Willis declared.

The Police Superintendent for Westminster, Supt Harry Craddock, defended his officers. "These are isolated cases and I don't think that its indicative of the entire force."

But we decided to put Mr Craddock to the test. Where abouts will one find Covent Garden? "Oh, that's up in Birmingham isn't it?"

We rest our case.

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
