An artist's rendering of the scene

Rita Island, Florida (IPP) - Authorities near Lake Okeechobee, Florida have been receiving numerous reports that a giant squid has been seen lurking near Rita Island at the south end of Lake Okeechobee.

Catfish fisherman are hunting for the giant squid and hope that catching it will bring in much needed income to the depressed fishing industry suffering from years of low water in the big lake. They hope to capitalize on the calimari craze which has taken hold in the southern states. The calimari dish has become very fashionable since television's southern cooking hostess Paula Dean featured the delicacy on one of her shows recently.

Authorities are warning fishermen not to underestimate the giant squid's power and ability to capsize fishing vessels as long as twenty-four feet in length.

Catfisherman Wayne Jim-Bob Poindexter Jr. told reporters that the squid have a great fondness for rum and he plans on using a trail of rum to lead the squid into a giant trap he has fashioned out of chicken wire and rope. The trap has been placed along a channel that the large squid travels through on a daily basis.

Authorities are asking local fisherman to wear name tags so that their remains can be identified should the squid get the better of them in the event of a life and death conflict. Locals think that the authorities are just trying to use scare tactics to keep them away from the prized squid. One game warden reminded the fisherman gathered near a boat ramp that this is the squid's territory and natural environment and that gives the squid an edge over the fisherman that can not be ignored.
