image for Rap Star impersonates NY cop by beating up black motorist
Real cop keeps lookout for black motorist

Rap star the Game (Jayceon Taylor) was given a conditional discharge after being brought to court for impersonating a police officer. Taylor, wearing a fake NY cop's uniform, stopped an automobile driven by a black motorist and started beating him in full view of other road users.

Real cops, believing he was one of their own, initially joined in, but when they asked which precinct Taylor was from and he couldn't answer, stopped and arrested him. While the poor motorist crawled away, the artist was bundled into a police car and taken downtown, where he was charged.

Taylor initially denied the charge, saying:

"I was doing something the cops aren't supposed to do. How can that be called impersonating a cop?"

But after consulting with the judge, his attorney agreed that any onlooker would have been fooled into believing that Taylor was a real police officer. At that point, the singer apologised and the judge agreed to show lenience, saying.

"He acted like a real cop. Thankfully he didn't assault a white man. I'll let him off this time."

A conditional discharge means that provided Taylor keeps out of trouble for six months, he will hear no more about it. But if he commits another offence, he could be sentenced for this one as well.
