In a memo uncovered by Spoof sources, Democratic National Committee Terry McAuliffe has asked all contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination to reserve "the expletive that will become your campaign rallying cry."

The December 21, 2003 memo, marked confidential, was apparently copied to former President Bill Clinton, U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and Barbara Streisand.

Sent in the aftermath of interviews in which Senator John Kerry used "the F-bomb" and General Wesley Clark said he would "beat the s*** out of any of my opponents that question my patriotism or military service," the memo urges the candidates to fill out an "Expletive Reservation Form (ERF)" and send it to the DNC as soon as possible.

"I urge those of you who have not given much thought to the subject to do so as quickly as possible because the holidays will soon be over and the campaign news coverage will intensify. Please do not let 2004 catch you off guard," McAuliffe wrote.

McAuliffe went on to suggest that "since ‘damn' and ‘hell' rarely raise an eyebrow," that no candidate should claim them on their reservation form.

"Be creative. Be creative," he went on to say, "And should you decide to use them, please limit hyphens to two or three."

Text of memo:

Memo
To: Presidential Candidates
From: Terry McAuliffe, DNC Chairman
CC: W.J. Clinton, Hon. H. Clinton, B. Streisand
Date: December 21, 2003
Re: Expletives
Confidential
Lady and Gentlemen:
One thing our great Democratic tradition has taught us is that we can do great things when we coordinate and cooperate. As we head into 2004 and the most important presidential election since 1992, I want ask that all of you give some quick thought to reserving the expletive that will become your campaign rallying cry.
Senator Kerry has already claimed "f***" and "f***ing." General Clark, while not as bold, has also reserved "s***" for use in his interviews and press conferences.
I urge those of you who have not given much thought to the subject to do so as quickly as possible because the holidays will soon be over and the campaign news coverage will intensify. Please do not let 2004 catch you off guard.
I have enclosed an Expletive Reservation Form (ERF) for your convenience. Since "damn" and "hell" rarely raise an eyebrow these days, I would suggest that they be considered appropriate for each of you, with no one claiming their rights.
Be creative. Be bold. And should you decide to use them, please limit hyphens to two or three.
Yours for a better America,
TMc
