SILVER CITY, New Mexico (ABSNN) - Oddly enough, given the large number of guns and ammunition stores found in a gun shop, very few people have ever been shot in one, unless, of course, "they had it coming." Such was the case in this tiny New Mexico town; or so says the employee who shot 65-year-old Rex Baumgartner a customer in the Billy the Kid Rod, Gun and Crossbow Store.
"I knew the old man was up to no good," said clerk Randal McCoy. "I watched him trying to sneak a "belly gun" outta his coat. He had robbery on his mind. So I just pretended to be cleaning my 1911A, Colt .45 Autoloader and shot him high in the back before he could get the draw on me!"
Most witnesses disagreed with McCoy and told the police that Baumgartner was just reaching inside his sport coat pocket to retrieve his wallet to pay for a set of ear plugs.
"My daddy was unarmed. He had his back turned to the clerk and was getting out his wallet when the stupid clerk accidentally shot him while he was trying to unload that damned Colt .45. He obviously never handled one before, didn't know what he was doing, shot my daddy, and now is trying to cover up his stupidity by claiming daddy was going to rob him," said Baumgartner's daughter Ethel.
Police asked McCoy why he'd shot the robbery suspect in the back.
"You can never allow a crook to get the upper hand on you," he said.
Baumgartner spoke to the press from his Texas hospital bed.
"I don't know what the hell happened, but they tell me there was an attempted robbery. I guess I just got caught up in the crossfire."
