Topics: Mitt Romney, jeans

Friday, 4 May 2012

In an apparent attempt to lessen the negative political fallout from his wife Ann's gaffe in wearing a $1,000 blouse, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney showed up at a campaign event in a $2,000 pair of jeans.

"These are designer pants from Duds for Rich Dudes on Rodeo Drive in L.A.," Romney bragged on a TV talk show. "Ann actually usually wears pricier garments. She was 'dressing down' for TV."

The candidate then revealed: "Up until now, I've just been wearing $1,000 versions of what Ann and I like to call, my 'fake regular guy outfit.'"

Asked if that's why he always wears jeans on the campaign trail, the candidate confessed: "As a big businessman, I've learned that sometimes you have to dupe the public. And as a stiff, the jeans make me look more relaxed. So, frankly, it's a PR gimmick to try to hide the truth-that I'm a rich stiff."

Romney said he did not think his comments dealing with the potential First Couple's wealthy tastes would reinforce public perceptions of him as a billionaire tycoon out of touch with working class Americans. "I don't give a hoot about what poorer people might believe, he declared-adding: "I didn't get rich by being as dumb as most of them."
