image for George Zimmerman Joins Facebook and Sends Friend Request to Trayvon Martin's Parents
Zimmerman feels good about reaching out to Trayvon Martin's parents via Facebook.

George Zimmerman, who admitted shooting and killing unarmed African-American teen Trayvon Martin and now faces second-degree murder charges, has joined Facebook.

Zimmerman stated that in 2005, he had a less than positive experience with Facebook's rival, the social networking site MySpace. According to Zimmerman, the edgy, artsy energy of MySpace prompted him to post a number of satirical comments regarding Hispanics that some might misinterpret as hostile or even racist.

"I have kind of a dry wit," he explained, "and because it's so subtle, it sometimes goes over people's heads. Which can lead to some bruised feelings." For that reason, all that Zimmerman plans to post on Facebook are nature photos and descriptions of workout sessions.

The admitted killer's first Facebook friend requests went to Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, Trayvon Martin's parents.

"I felt kind of bad about what happened to Trayvon," said Zimmerman. "I figured this was a perfect opportunity to make amends."

Trayvon's parents have not yet accepted the friend requests, but as Zimmerman noted, "That's their choice. I made the move; now it's on them. If they want to stand their ground, nothing I can do about that. In Florida, at least."
