Anti-Abortion Foes' Tighten Access to Abortion

BOISE - Fresh from their recent victory in the state Senate vote on Monday for a measure requiring women to submit to a vaginal ultrasound before undergoing an abortion, Republican Idaho lawmakers vowed to tighten abortion restrictions even further. "I will soon introduce a bill requiring an anal ultrasound as well before an abortion," said Senator Rand Lorch.

Advocates say that the current measure requiring a vaginal ultrasound does not provide pregnant women with the information they require to make an informed decision regarding abortion, claiming that a vaginal ultrasound only shows a fetus from one angle. "We feel that the anus should be mandatory, since you can only see so much through a vagina," said Sally Lee, spokesperson for the New Life Foundation.

Foes of the anal lobby railed against a provision of the bill that would require the vaginal and anal ultrasounds to be performed simultaneously. "They are always going on about the evils of pornography, and yet they come up with this," said Idaho Democrat State Senator Dan Posnanski. Senator Lorch rejected such criticism, saying that "What's good for the gander is good for the goose."
