There are nine million bicycles in Beijing

BURNLEY MP Gordon Birtwistle took advantage of a photo opportunity and used pedal power to support an energy saving campaign.

He is backing "Earth Hour", when people across the world will switch off their lights on March 26 between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to highlight climate change, regardless of the inherent risk involved with people stumbling around in the dark.

The Lib Dem got on his bike to power up batteries which will be used to project natural images onto the Royal Albert Hall during Earth Hour.

Birtwistle said: "I'm delighted to be able to show my support for Earth Hour, although I've no idea what natural images are and how they will help. I think it's to remind us all that we have only one planet, Earth. And that we will have to come together for one hour to protect it from the danger of Climate Change.

I don't know who Mr Change is, but he mustn't like the dark. We will stand a better chance against him if we turn the lights off. At least that's what the panda told me.

I'm also delighted to see pandas doing so well. Things looked pretty bleak for them once over, but they have evolved to use bicycles in order to search for bamboo and stuff. It's a logical evolutionary step really, pandas come from China and there are loads of bicycles there. Oh, and this one has learned to talk!"
