Bristol - (Reuterus): Did something in Robert Napper's DNA trigger alarm bells among Bristol Police saliva swabbers?

"It's true, we've had a massive breakthrough," a senior genetics sleuth confirmed today.

"That's the beauty of DNA, it shows you a roadmap of the parental motorways making up an individual signature."

The specialist team was brought in this week following some spectacular successes in seeming dead-end murder mysteries.

In 2008 evil monster Napper was convicted of blond stunner Rachel Nickell's senseless fatal stabbing on Wimbledon Common in 1992.

But he nearly got away with it because a weedy local loner, Colin Stagg - an uncanny facial lookalike - was selected for special treatment in the case.

Napper was eventually apprehended and brought to justice because of advances in genetics technology that simplify the reading of an individual genome.

Today's police pounce on Dutch architect Vincent Tabak raises the spectre of possible consanguinity - a serial murder detection specialist's ultimate Holy Grail.

"They may share a common ancestor or contemporary relatives," a National Poisons Unit pathologist commented on the development this evening.

"Or their respective DNA profiles may have a common denominator such as being traced to swabs found on an individual - such as a hooker."

Napper was held indefinitely at Broadmoor on Her Maj's Pleasure in December 2008 after admitting scores of serious offences against women.
