Wilderness for Clegg?

One hundred Liberal Democrat activists have suggested to their leader Nick Clegg that the party will be back 'in the political wilderness' if they do not oppose the proposed rise in student fees.

However there were few signs today that Clegg will pay much attention to plea of the unhappy Lib Dems. 'This is the taste of power we have been missing for too many years' he told a supporter who wants to remain anonymous 'we can't buck the first real test of our lack of integrity. That would show how politically naive we are. Anyway there's not going to be an election for over 4 years so what is all the fuss about? By then things will be perspective and we will reap the reward.'

One of the activists hearing this verdict could not help showing her disappointment. 'If Clegg thinks I and my colleagues are going to go knocking on doors to encourage support for him at any election he's in for a shock. Most us will be campaigning to get rid of him.'

The future could look bleak for the beleaguered politician. However a safe Tory seat awaits him at the next election when a seat in the Home Counties awaits him. All he needs is a Tory with a big majority to die.
