image for Isle of Wight News - Zoo cut off

The Isle of Wight Zoo at Yaverland has been cut off from the outside work by two sets of road works.

The on-going roadworks on Yaverland Road, the B3396, have over-run with a scheduled completion date now set for early December, whilst sewer improvement works outside the Dinosaur Park started on time, closing the other road on the other side of Yaverland.

Yaverland itself is also cut off, leaving its thirty residents without access to the outside world, except on foot across the fields behind the zoo.

After hiking past the Russet Fox enclosure (pictured), it was possible to ask the residents of Yaverland how this was affecting them.

"Well, to be honest," said Dora Porter, 72 of Colver Way, "I didn't know until you told me. I've not been out of Yaverland since 1986, when I were a young gal."

Yaverland is home to two bed and breakfasts and a self catering chalet complex. Holly Day, 35, who runs Sandown Manor was equally surprised at the news.

"You know, I thought it'd been quite this week," she said.

Holiday makers staying at the self-catering complex were blasé about being cut off from home.

"Well," said Geoff Strimmer, 36 of Lewisham, "if we can't get home, we'll just have to stay here. I've got beer and a beach, what more do I need? The kids love the beach, I love the beer."

The Isle of Wight Zoo has actually seen an increase in the number of visitors, as the local residents now have nothing else to do. "It's a bumper week for us," said Rod Entwistle, 44, site manager. "It's normally quiet outside of school holidays."

Isle of Wight council has apologised to the residents for a failure in synchronising the road works correctly, and will be sending in supplies for the pub and corner shop by helicopter.
