Tea tastes sweeter in a valuable antique

Julie, 24, and Julian Jules, 25, of Ventnor had a tidy little windfall last week. Julian's grandmother, Jillian, had left them an ornate flowery teapot, single cup and saucer in her will.

Jillian Jules was well known in Ventnor, and was often seen spending the morning walking from her house to the local shop with her Zimmer frame and small Yorkshire tabby cat, until three weeks ago, she passed away while lifting a two kilogram bag of sugar down from a high shelf. It appeared she had a secret that nobody could have guessed, not even her grandson and his wife.

"There wasn't much in the will," said Julian. "She rented her house, and only owned a single chair."

Every day she would return from the shop, and make herself tea using her flowery teapot, and drink it until dinner time. Many a visitor disregarded the teapot, but it was her only real possession and in her will she left it to Julian who visited regular as clockwork once a year.

"I welled up when I realised she'd left me the teapot," said Julian. "She'd had that teapot, cup and saucer for ever, I think her grandmother gave it to her."

"There is only one cup and saucer," Julie added. "Which means we have to take it in turns to drink from it. I had the thought that with it being so old, it might be worth something."

They contacted an antiques expert who told them it was a rare Dutch teapot from the early eighteen hundreds.

"I was bowled over," said Julian. "We discovered it was worth just over ten pound."

"Eleven pound twenty," added Julie.

"We're not going to sell it though," Julian pointed out. "But it will save us money in sugar, as knowing it is such a valuable antique makes the tea taste sweeter."
