image for Oh dear, it's another 'public consultation'
Any suggestions for our £1,400,000,000,000 overdraft?

Politicials love 'public consultations' because they seem so democratic and open.

"You tell us what you want and we'll do it" Right? No actually it's "You tell us what you want and then we'll ignore you and do what we want." a la Heathrow's 3rd runway consultation.

A consultation on cuts is a stupid idea in the first place - it's like saying to a child "Which one of your pets can we eat?"

Suggestions have already been coming in and they do not make pleasant reading - "I want less hospitals so my girlfriend will stop having more kids." said one. "I want less police because they keep arresting me" said another. "I want less schools because of the morning traffic" said a third.

Matthew Elliot of the Taxpayers Alliance stated "We've already shown the government how to save £50B just by being 'more careful' with our money. Throw in some much needed Quango slaying and we'll be nearly there for this year. How can the public be expected to understand government financing when not even the treasury does?"

Meanwhile, the markets sneezed on the pound and put it in a lift going sideways.
