Sennen Cove in Cornwall

Walking on a beach these days, you can find almost anything; buckets, spades, motorcycles, chocolate biscuits, wooden decking, seaweed and even condoms. Much of these items come from an alarming rise in shipwrecks these days. Many of these are blatant insurance jobs but some are the results of shipping companies not wanting to pay docking fees and simply throwing things overboard.

The first recorded instance of this is found in the book of Jonah in the bible where hew was tossed overboard and ended up in the belly of a large fish.

In Sennen Cove near Lands End, Cornwall, a beachcomber, Sandy Shaw, was sifting through all the flotsam, jetsam and detritus left on the beach by the tide. She came across a large semicircular object.

Sandy told In Seine News,

"I took my dog for a walk along the seafront and there were lots of interesting bits to see. My dog started barking at this big lump about 100 yards way. I thought at first it was a WWII mine, so I phoned the bomb disposal squad on my mobile.

"They were good. They brought in one of those massive helicopters with all the gear and cordoned off the beach all within arf an 'our. Some of the soldiers crept along the beach on their bellies like dogs with worms, and then they just rolled about laughin their eds offÂ…

"The Captain came up to me trying not to laugh 'What you've found there, lady, is a Galapagos Tortoise. We can't blow that up, it would make too much of a mess!'

"He also told me that the creature was still alive and that I should contact World Wildlife Trust or David Attenborough or something."
