Pirbright Laboratories, Slurry - (Ass mess): The Government's Chief Veterinary Officer Debby Reynolds has admitted on national TV news that she was caught on the hop by a warning from The Spoof! on 26 July this year that the UK floods would spread foot and mouth disease.
Reynolds, who once starred with Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse in the 1952 Hollywood musical blockbuster Singin' In The Rain before re-inventing herself as a top flight UK veterinary scientist, was interviewed on the BBC's flagship Ten O'Clock News and asked to comment on why nobody heeded the 26 July warning which the satirical site carried some ten days ahead of the disaster breakout.
"Well, you wouldn't take any notice of something like that, would you?" Reynolds squirmed sheepishly.
"It's all been a bit of a joke to us. This queen mudder writer, it would be daft to take anything written by her seriously wouldn't it?
"I mean I could have been the laughing stock of Whitehall if I had told my colleagues: 'Check for Foot and Mouth Disease Because a Satire Website Says The Floods Will Bring it Back to Britain', wouldn't I?
"As it is I prefer to be a lesser laughing stock for not having taken any notice of that story which now has proved spookily prophetic.....
"As for my having made a song and dance about the whole fiasco, why I refute that strongly.
"And finally there's just one thing I want to say about the July floods in the UK....and that is:
"Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Singin' in the rain"
