A huge water bird returning from its midday feast had to make an emergency landing on Lake Windermere yesterday.

The flying duck panicked on its way back as it neared the landing area and started to flap its wings.

"It was flapping like mad," said one observer, "and this frightened other ducks that had landed safely."

The duck hit the water at about five miles an hour, but failed to retract both of its big webbed feet.
There was an enormous splash which sent ripples right across the lake. People picnicking on the shore side had to move their chairs back a bit.

The duck survived, but it has been issued with a warning by officers from the local Chinese takeaway, who run regular search and rescue services for ducks - especially big fat ones.
