image for Tow truck towed by the same company
Workington is dotted with such signs

A Workington Vehicle Recovery Service has been forced to tow one of its own trucks, after it was discovered parks in a no-park zone in Workington town centre.

"It's a bit embarrassing really," said tow-truck driver Barry O'Nick. "I was on my rounds, and I really wanted some lunch, so I stopped by the Big Bite Butty Bar, jumped out of the cab, and when I came out, I saw it being towed away."

Workington council, who operate a fleet of twenty vehicles, insist that there are no exceptions to the rules of illegal parking.

"Regardless of who the person parking is," said councillor Matthew Dour, "illegal parking is illegal parking."

It costs three hundred pounds to have a vehicle released from the Workington Vehicle Recovery Service's compound. A cost that will have to be met by the Workington Vehicle Recovery Service itself.

"If you ask me," said O'Nick. "Which you have. It's bloody stupid."

The Workington Vehicle Recovery Service will send somebody over from head office to the compound with the money out of the petty cash fund. That money will then be banked, sent to the council, who will then reimburse the Workington Vehicle Recovery Service, for the money spent out of petty cash.

"Rules are rules," said Dour. "If we didn't have rules, where would be? In Whitehaven that's where."

O'Nick doesn't know which of the other drivers at the Workington Vehicle Recovery Service towed his vehicle. He does have his suspicions, however.

"I reckon it was Dave Johnson," he said. "He's never forgiven me for sitting on his pork pie. He always vowed he'd get me back for it."

O'Nick has escaped any action this time, but is under strict instructions to ensure that he never gets his tow truck towed again.
