image for SPL Keen To Introduce British League Cup

As part of its radical new plan to reorganise Scottish football, the SPL has proposed the reintroduction of a cross border cup tournament.

SPL chief executive Neil Lancaster is keen to re-establish a cup competition between Scottish and English clubs similar to the Texaco Cup and the Anglo-Scottish Cup of the early-mid Seventies.

Doncaster explained :

"The idea of having a competitive tournament for clubs north and south of the border that weren't good enough too qualify for Europe has been gaining more and more support as 2011 has progressed.

"The prospect of playing mediocre sides different from the mediocre ones SPL clubs play 4 times a season has a certain appeal.

"It would hopefully break the monotony of the current set up and it certainly couldn't be any worse than the dross fans currently have to put up with".

The task now for Doncaster and the rest of the SPL board is to find enough mediocre sides down South that are of the same opinion.
