The Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond (KNVB), the Royal Dutch Football Association has revealed their recipe for success at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
While their bigger European rivals, France, Italy and England have been sent homewards to think again, the Netherlands play Uruguay in the semi final this evening.
The Dutch coach has revealed that his players have succeeded because they have eaten only the old Dutch favourite foods to remind them of home and the 14 million or so they are playing for.
Fellow guests at the Dutch base may have been surprised to see the Dutch players sprinkling hagelslag (hundreds and thousands) on their breakfast toast. A few speculaas (biscuits) dipped in coffee reminded the Dutch of home.
The Dutch may also have surprised some by eating their poffertjes (pancakes) with all manner of filling. No wonder Wesley Sneijder ia always smiling, he has some Limburgervlaai and kroketten to look forward to after the match. Everyone loves Dutch kroketten (1, or so, at every railway atation vending machine).
Dutch correspondent Tonnie Rocca advises that the Dutch team enjoy their borrel at 5pm. She suggests maybe a glass of beer or a nip of Jenever (Dutch gin) with some bitterbollen (breaded meat balls)dipped in mustard. mmmmmmmmm Lekker!!
Following all this keuken, Tonnie advises that the Dutch guys love their shawarma (kebabs) late in the evening as they dream of showing off the Jules Rimet Trophy on the Dam, in oud Amsterdam.
