image for Federer "I quit" - tennis world in shock
Federers' last stand

Roger Federer, until recently the worlds' no.1 tennis player, has decided to quit.

The superstar, who was beaten by Spaniard Rafa Nadal in the Australian Open on Sunday, declared, "You know, I've really tried to play my best game this last year and I just can't beat Rafa. He's young and strong and I can't compete with him. He's no.1 and rightly so, therefore I realise my time is up and I will move on."

The Swiss legend promised the watching fans in Melbourne that he would be back next year but in an emotional press conference today he weeped, "In my heart I knew it was the last time but I couldn't make myself say it then. Now it is right to say it."

Sue Barker, leading tennis presenter at the BBC, was full of praise for Federer, "He's been almost unbeatable these last few years until Nadal arrived, so although he was one of the best players of all time he has now relinquished his crown. We will miss his mastery."

A longer press conference is scheduled for Saturday.
