image for Burnley Fan Threw Coin At Didier Drogba For Children In Need
For 'Water' read 'Drogba'

The Burnley fan who threw a coin at Chelsea star Didier Drogba after the Ivory Coaster celebrated his goal in Wednesday's Carling Cup defeat, did so for a very good cause - Children In Need.

The fan, who cannot be named for legal reasons, claims he was challenged by his mates to gently toss a coin in the direction of Drogba, and in return, his mate would contribute £10 to the wonderful Charity Appeal.

He said his mate still owed him the money.

Other fans nearby said they also threw coins at the African, because they thought he, himself, was appealing for cash.

One fan, Tony Mullett, said:

"He came over with his arms outstretched as if he was a bit skint. We threw him some loose change, but the ungrateful bugger lobbed it straight back. It coulda took someone's eye out!"

Drogba is in trouble with police after the incident during Chelsea's amazing 5-4 penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of the Championship side. He later apologised, but the damage had already been done.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has spoken out in support of Drogba, answering allegations of 'provocation' against him. He said:

"Didi wasn't provocating. You gotta runderstand, where he's from, that Ivory Tower place, they all do that fing where they stand in front of the oppositing fans and give it the old 'come on ye barstards!' bit. Nuffin wrong wiv that is there?"

Children In Need starts on BBC 1 at 7pm.
