Johhhny Metgod (archive)

Portsmouth manager Tony Adams has reacted swiftly to fill the position of first-team coach at the club after Martin Keown rejected his offer last week, by hiring famous 1980's balding Dutch guy, Johhnnny Metgod.

Metgod was said to be excited at the prospect of returning to England, where he spent four years playing for Nottingham Forest and Spurs between 1984 and 1988. (source:BBC)

He says it was extremely difficult playing for two clubs at the same time, but with no little skill and determination, he managed to pull it off, and is loved at both clubs.

He is fondly remembered for thundering in a 40-yard free-kick for Forest against West Ham in 1986, a goal which included a 10-yard run-up complete with an amusing finger-pointing celebration. (source: BBC)

Metgod now says doing the finger-pointing whilst doing the 10-yard run-up was one of the most intricate pieces of skill he ever performed, and, for ten years after he retired from the game, he peddled this quirky routine in circuses around Holland.

The Dutchman will work on improving the technical skills of the first team, and revealed he is keen to implement his own brand of the "Total Football" philosophy made famous by former Dutch coach Rinus Michels in the 1970s.

This raised doubts in the minds of some of the Pompey top brass, and only when they quizzed Metgod further, did they realise that he thought he had signed up for Portuguese club FC Porto, not Portsmouth FC.

Tony Adams managerial record at Wycombe Wanderers:

Played: 53; Won: 12; Drew: 21; Lost: 20.
