Eric Cantona is set to join up with his old Manchester United teammate Mark Hughes at Manchester City in the next few days.

Former Manchester United hero Cantona has been tipped in recent years to one day take-over the managerial throne from Boss Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, but sources close to the former French ace have alleged that he is anxious to enter back into the English game. However, due to Ferguson's "extended stay" at the club he has managed for 22 years, Cantona has now decided the time is right to join up with his old strike partner and join United's fierce rivals Manchester City who are managed by former United star Mark Hughes and are experiencing a revolution under new super-rich owners the Abu Dhabi United group who splashed £32.5 million on Brazillian ace Robinho in a deadline-day transfer "highjack" from Chelsea.

It is believed Cantona will join in the next 48 hours as First team coach but will also be involved with aiding Hughes in his worldwide search for the best talent available ahead of their much-anticipated January transfer window spending-spree.

Cantona who played with Hughes at United in the mid-90s and together they won two domestic League and Cup doubles in what is still described by many as the best United team ever and ironically the strike-pair will now be recreated in a management capacity at Manchester City.

Both City and United yesterday were unavailable for comment but one United fan the club's Carrington training ground said "I'm gutted. Cantona's a United legend and the perfect replacement for Fergie one day. Now City have got their grubby hands on him I can't believe it. Getting Sparky (Hughes) in as their manager was bad enough but Cantona too? I'm absolutely gutted."
