image for Welsh and Scottish fans behaviour 'unacceptable'
A Ruud awakening

The Welsh and Scottish football associations have attacked both countries' sets of supporters following their national teams' recent heartbreaking exits from the 2004 European Championships.

Wales came dangerously close to reaching the finals of a major international football tournament since the sport was first invented in 1156, but were edged out by Russia at the Millennium Stadium. Scottish hopes were dashed by a 19-year old Dutchman who no one had ever heard of before.

In a joint statement the Scottish Football Association and the Football Association of Wales described many fans' behaviour as "simply unacceptable" and said they had forgotten "what it truly means to follow our national sides."

"During both matches the other night, Welsh and Scottish fans were on their feet urging their respective teams to victory," said joint SFA/FAW spokesman Dai McFerguson. "It was as if they'd forgotten what they were actually there for. It was not until the second half when it was obvious that both teams were going out that they remembered to start singing anti-England songs."

He added that both nations had to show their allegiance to their national causes by getting behind Australia who are playing England in the Rugby World Cup Final this Saturday "even if it is a different sport."

"Welsh and Scottish fans should take this opportunity to hope that England get defeated in preparation for the European Championships in Portugal next year," he said. "Hopefully by then, everyone will know it is their duty to get down their local pub and support whoever England are playing."
