image for David Beckham linked with move to Saddleworth Rangers

Star says he wants one more challenge before retiring from the game.

The world of football was buzzing last night when news emerged that David Beckham could leave L A Galaxy next week, and make a surprise move to local club Saddleworth Rangers.

The Rangers owners, Sheikh Anvac and Sheikh Meerigid flew into Delph Airport from Abu Dhabi yesterday to check out on the progress that chairman Algernon Hipplewhite was making with his transatlantic negotiations. Mr Hipplewhite told us "It would be a real feather in our cap if we could attract someone with the charisma of David Beckham to the Sheik Anvac Arena, and we are trying like mad to get him over here. I must admit that up to now that negotiations have been a bit slow, as I haven't spoken to David personally, and L A Galaxy haven't called since I left two messages on the answering machine. But, we live in hope, as they haven't said "No" to our generous offer".

But what could Rangers, who are currently 10th in the Andrex Northern Counties League 2, offer that would attract someone like Beckham to the Pennine foothills.

The club gave us a look at the tempting package that they hope will lure the superstar to make Rovers his first choice.

Critchleys Car Hire are giving free use of a low mileage 2007 Ford Mondeo.

Abu Dhabi Investments are to break the club record with a £850 a week salary.

Dobcross Travel Inn are offering a Family room for £30 per week.

"Offally Good" Tripe Emporium have donated 7 tripe suppers a week free.

W H Smudges newsagents have donated free daily newspapers (delivered).

John and Agnes of Hillside Dairy Farm are supplying free milk and eggs.

Itchcocks Dry Cleaners are donating free dry cleaning on the first 10 items.

The Cock and Trumpet Inn are offering first two drinks per day free, plus unlimited free pool and pork scratchings.

The clubs executives are rightly pleased with the package they have put together, and say that "If Mr Beckham doesn't accept an offer like this, it just goes to show, what a greedy bastard he is".
