image for Euro 2012: Italy's Antonio Cassano Confused Over Religion
Italian players discuss religion before the match against Spain

More controversy at Eurovision 2012 in Poland/Ukraine last night, as Italy's Antonio Cassano became known as "a bit of an idiot" after a glaring error on the subject of religion.

Known as a bit of an idiot by me, that is.

Cassano, who had earlier made known his frank opinion on homosexuality, told reporters that, despite not believing in God, he felt that he had been 'blessed' after being able to play for Italy again so soon after suffering an acute illness.

Cassano was taken ill on the Milan team plane following the 3-2 win over Roma in October 2011, but started Sunday's 1-1 draw with Spain just eight months after undergoing heart surgery.

He returned to club duty in April, but claims he didn't expect to feature for the national team in the Euros.

He said:

"I honestly didn't think I would feature for the national team in the Euros. When you arrive to a certain point where it is a case of live or die, everything else becomes secondary."

Repeating a word twice for extra dramatic effect, he went on:

"I saw the future as grey, very grey, but fortunately I am here. I have been blessed, and even if I am not a believer I do feel I have been blessed.

Asked how he could be could have been 'blessed' by a God that doesn't exist, he laughed:

"Oh, my God! I don't know. I can't really answer that question. Jesus Christ! I am only a stupid footballer. Please ask my agent. He thinks for me."
