image for Euro 2012: Roy Hodgson applies for Chelsea job
The Nou Camp - scene of The Great Escape

Roy Hodgson has secretly sent his CV to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovitch after the 1-1 draw between England and France at Euro 2012 after a comment from Patrice Evra in a post-match interview.

When asked his opinion on England's defensive style of play during the 90 minutes, the French and Man United full-back replied "It was like watching Chelsea against Barcelona".

Evra was referring to the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Nou Camp when Chelsea were defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg. Barcelona had an astonishing 73% possession and led 2-0, but Chelsea managed to pull back to 2-2 with goals on the break in the last minute of the first and second half. John Terry was sent off in the first half when the score on the night 1-0 to Barcelona. In the second half, Lionel Messi missed a penalty which eould have put the home team 3-0 up on the night.

Hodgson has only been England manager for six weeks, in which he has picked his squad for Euro 2012, played two warm-up matches and the match against France was his first competitive international.

A source inside the England camp told our reporter last night "Roy thought the comments from Evra were a compliment and after spells at West Brom, Fulham and Liverpool he really fancies the chance to manage a big club. No one has told him Patrice was being ironic!"

STOP PRESS: Chelsea announced today that they have given the interim managers job to another former WBA boss Roberto Di Matteo on a permanent basis, following the haul of FA Cup and Champions League in his three month caretaker role.
