image for Euro 2012: John Terry 'will refuse to shake hands with Patrice Evra'
To shake or not to shake - that is the speculation

More controversy surrounded former England captain John Terry tonight after he was told of Patrice Evra's comments after England and France shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Euro 2012 Group D opener.

Joleon Lescott gave England the lead but Manchester City team-mate Samir Nasri equalised to ensure both teams take a point into their second games.

After the match Evra told the media: "I think we played much better than England, but in the end it was a draw and we are a bit frustrated. They played in the way that Chelsea played against Barcelona."

A source close to Terry spoke to earlier "When JT heard Patrice's comments he took it as an insult to the way Chelsea (and England) play. If England meet France again in the knockout stages - he will refuse to shake the hand of the Manchester United full-back".

During the 2011/12 domestic season, brothers Anton Ferdinand of QPR & Rio Ferdinand both refused to shake the hand of Terry when their teams met with Chelsea, after Terry was accused of racist language towards Anton when QPR beat Chelsea 1-0 at Loftus Road in October.

Luis Suarez refused to shake the hand of Patrice Evra, after receiving an eight match ban for offensive language towards Evra when Liverpool met Man United earlier in the season.

Fabio Capello left his position as England coach after he told an Italian radio station he was not happy the FA took the captaincy from John Terry (again) after the CPS announced he would be charged over the incident. Terry had previously lost the captaincy two years earlier for an affair with fellow player Wayne Bridges partner.

Rio Ferdinand was left out of the England squad, but Roy Hodgson says it was 'purely for footballing reasons' and not top do with the incident between his brother and John Terry.
