Scotland football manager Craig Levein has sensationally said that he still believes Scotland have a chance of winning the European football championship this summer, despite Scotland not qualifying and the fact that the competition begins in Poland and the Ukraine this weekend.
"Aye, it's a long shot," he admits. "But Greece's financial collapse is imminent, so they might have to drop oot, leaving a place for another country to fill in."
It was mentioned that Scotland would not be first on the list for replacement countries, even if such a situation did occur. However, Levein remained optimistic that if enough countries dropped out then Scotland could still make it to the finals.
He also mentioned that he still had hope that Scotland would win the 2010 World Cup, even though Spain won it nearly two years ago. He is considering launching an appeal that if Scotland had only made it to the finals they might have stood a chance.
"It reminds me of the World Cup in 1978. Back then we had it in our grasp. We could have won it, if only we hadn't been resoundingly beaten in every single match."
New England manager Roy Hodgson agreed that the possibility of Scotland winning Euro 2012 was remote, but he said "they still had a better chance than England."
