Speech Therapist wins Mercury and says "Fanks"
Tuesday, 8 September 2009

Surprise Mercury winner, Speech Debelle, beat favourites including La Roux and Kasabian to walk off with the £20,000 prize - before standing up to say "Fanks".
Yup - nobody could miss why she called her fabulous debut album 'Speech Therapy" And just in case anyone did, she went on to 'fank her mum and her gran and also gave a special "fanks" to her label Big Dada - before saying "Fanks" quite a few more times in a speech that lasted under two minutes.
Sales of her new LP are expected to get a huge boost even though it's so far failed to appear in the UK charts.
"That's the thing about the Mercury", said record producer and judge Stigwood Ferrari as he counted a huge wad of £50 notes. "We always manage to surprise everyone and pick out a name that none of the bookies ever give a chance to.
Meanwhile, Speech, from South London said "This proves that if you believe in something and you think you can do it, you can." These words will mark her début in the next edition of the Oxford Book of Quotations.
She then added, "I feel so good, it feels better than I imagined. I don't get emotional, I am emotional."
Mum and Gran were also crying buckets but cheered up when they saw the cheque.
