A Swiss mosque, featuring a burkha-clad cuckoo
Today, as thousands of Alpine clocks cuckooed 17:00 and white people all over Switzerland tucked into their mid-afternoon Toblerone, the results of their recent controversial minaret-ban poll were announced.
In democracy-crazy Switzerland, the government are known for being very neutral. So much so that they dare not make any decisions for themselves, and every issue is voted for directly by the people - from the price of petrol to the winners of televised Saturday night singing contests.
But the recent poll has caused much concern, it is about whether there should be a complete ban on the construction of any more minarets (those funny looking poles that stick up from mosques).
The vote came out in favour of a ban. The ban does not mean that no more mosques can be constructed in Switzerland, but only that they must be made to look very boring and inconspicuous.
The ambassador to Saudi Arabia spoke out against the ban, saying, "This vote was completely unnecessary. If a bunch of Christians came to a Muslim country and built a church, we wouldn't have an election about banning them from building any more. We'd just bomb the place!"
