Houston - The recently repaired Hubble Space Telescope (HST) sent back its first photograph today to the Houston Space Center. The photo showed a fuzzy, white dot in space, almost 75 billion light years away. It took a few minutes before shocked astronomers realized why the white dot looked familiar. The HST took a picture of itself.
The photo proves an odd scientific theory that the Universe is a four-dimensional sphere folded in upon itself. If you fly in a spaceship for as far as you can, you eventually end up right where you started. The Universe has no edge, no center, no beginning and no end.
The bizarre discovery seems to be against common sense. Mankind went through a similar dilemma when Columbus proved the world was round. The idea of sailing around the world and ending up where you started was incomprehensible to people of the Middle Ages.
NASA is now planning to add another lens to the HST. New theories suggest there may be an infinite number of HST's to be discovered.
The Universe could be like an infinite series of interlocking Russian Dolls. Others think the Universe is like a gigantic M. C. Escher drawing. All agree it is much stranger and much more surreal than anyone can imagine!
