image for HD DVD Format Exposed as Hoax

It was announced today that the HD DVD format would be abandoned after nearly ten years of development and promotion. "We regret being so wrong," admitted Doug Hashcode, HD North American spokesman. "But it now appears that the HD DVD format was just a hoax."

Hashcode's comments come on the heels of a blistering report in Video Technology Magazine which analyzed the data stream coming from a typical HD DVD player.

"The HDMI interface was what threw everyone off," explained Jim Scanline, lead author of the report. "Consumers convinced themselves that HD DVD improved the image, but all they really needed was a better cable."

Mr. Scanline held an inexpensive HDMI cable above his head and struck a victory pose. "This dirty little secret has been in the industry for years. Our tests finally exposed the fraud."

Although the competing Blu-ray DVD format wasn't addressed in Scanline's report, he hinted at a follow-up study currently underway.

"There will be more surprises," he said, winking at the cameras. "And not just for video. All I can say for now is don't throw out your AM radios and eight track players."
