BEIJING, China - Researchers found that human ancestors, although all originating from Africa, were Chinese.
A three-month study by the Scientific Research Center of the State Council (SRC) defied the conventional assumption that having ancestral roots in Africa was the same thing as having African ancestors.
China's Ministry of State Security and State Ethnic Affairs Commission released a joint statement earlier this week announcing the validity of the researchers' work.
Scientists had believed that anatomically modern humans (AMH), who evolved from archaic Homo sapiens around 200,000 years ago, were African because of where the evolution took place.
"We were all wrong," a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, "and this is without a doubt a breakthrough in modern biology. While early humans originated from Africa, we now know that they were, indeed, Chinese."
Evidence shows the diaspora of these Chinese settlers throughout Eurasia, eventually establishing an advanced civilization in a territory that is known today as China.
From there Chinese premier Wen Jiabao declares that China's claim over the disputed territories of Taiwan and Penghu is scientifically justified.
"Thousands of years ago when our people started occupying islands of Oceania," Wen added, "they formed the so-called 'Austronesian peoples' who occupied Taiwan before even more Chinese settlers got there a couple hundred years ago."
"While separatists claim they've developed their own culture and instituted a different political system, they cannot deny the truth proven by science that they are Chinese nationals required to 'safeguard the unification of the country' as per Chapter II, Article 52 of the Constitution of China."
