Research into producing electricity from urine has been carried out by scientists at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol.
It is claimed the publication of a research paper into the viability of urine as a fuel for Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) is a world first. They say tests have produced small amounts of energy, but more research could produce "useful" levels of power.
Chief Technician Betty Wizzesmore told us, "This is a definite go, though it does depend on the kind of urine we're using. For example, samples taken from Newcastle Students first thing on a Sunday morning could propel a Toyota Prius for eighty miles, whereas samples taken from a Retirement home in Bournemouth wouldn't fire up a Flymo."
Mrs. Wizzesmore admitted that they had to be careful to harvest the right liquid from the Newcastle study. "We made the mistake of not testing it adequately; some was actually very cold and only then did we realise it was actually Carlsberg. You couldn't actually tell by the taste."
