image for Open Letter To Frito-Lay Go Anywhere But Hungry

Note to readers: The word in the letter is supposed to be "Hungrian" like you're hungry. However, The Spoof keeps changing it to "Hungarian." If you spell it correctly then the whole thing is pointless. I have changed this twice so far, and am about to give up.

I expect by Friday the word up above will no longer be 'hungrian' and instead will be hungarian! grrrrrrrr

Dear Frito-Lay:

This morning driving to work I was very disturbed to see a billboard proclaiming
“Frito-Lay -- Go Anywhere But Hungry.”

As an American of Hungarian descent I am outraged. Perhaps you meant to make a play on the word hungry, but you seem to have forgotten a basic geographic fact – there is a country named Hungry, too!

Hungry is a small eastern European country filled with hard working men and women all trying to overcome the more than forty years of sadistic communistic rule. While tourism might not be their number one industry they do not need to have the proud Hungarian name ridiculed here in America.

My ancestors arrived in the United States in the early part of the previous century and I have unfortunately lost track with any relatives who might be alive there. However, while I am 100% American, I still feel the pull of the old country. I am sure that your ad campaign “Go Anywhere But Hungry” would prove hurtful and humiliating to the entire Hungarian people. I am sure you undertook this advertising with no malice, and no doubt this is thoughtless rather than malevolent, but as an American of Hungarian descent I would like to ask you to please rethink this line of advertising.

I am sending a copy of my letter to the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and to the Hungarian UN legation, in New York.

Sincerely,

Charles Veszprem Barber
