The only thing the press love more than a celebrity scandal is a political sex scandal.

Office affairs are never a wise idea, just ask two Jags. JP is the most high-ranking cabinet minister snarled in a sex scandal since ex foreign secretary Robin Cook left his wife to marry his PA Gaynor Regan.

Robert Finlayson Cook, one of the most formidable parliamentarians of his era was held in extremely high regard by friends and foes alike. He had at one time been feted as a future Prime Minister.

The much broadcasted and unpleasant breakup of his marriage in 1997, implicated disclosures of a double life.

It was during this period that he discovered whilst traveling to Heathrow to go on holiday with then wife Margaret, that a prominent Sunday newspaper was on the verge of divulging sensational details of an affair with his PA, Gaynor Regan.

Directed by Alistair Campbell to make a quick move, he told her that their marriage was over and left.

She enquired as to what his actions would be if she committed suicide. "I should, of course, be sorry," he replied. A quick divorce followed and Ms Regan very soon became Mrs Cook.

Margaret Cook had her moment. In a book serialised in the Sunday Times, she wrote about intense particulars of the couple's love life, accusing her ex husband of taking not one but six lovers.
Individuals from all walks of life experience affairs. With politicians it's out of the ordinary, thus becoming newsworthy.

With history repeating itself recently, opposition leaders would not be unrealistic if the thought did not cross their mind that Downing Street now looks a very realistic destination.

pity old Profuma never had today's advisors.
