image for Isn't It Time To Shoot The Elephant In The Room? Who needs an AR-15?

Following the recent shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, isn't it time that the US stood back, took a good long look at itself and focused the telescopic sight on the elephant in the room?

The pro-gun lobby rants about the fact that lone nutters will always kill people, regardless of gun controls. Psychiatrists will tell you, and rightly so, the lone nutters are relatively rare and that there is nothing that can be done to stop them.

The US averages two mass shooting incidents a year. Does the US produce more than its fair shair of mass killers per capita? Probably not, when you look at international statistics.

In 1996, Australia suffered the Port Arthur Massacre, when lone nutter Martin Bryant shot 35 people dead and wounded a further 23 people. He used automatic weapons, which were legally available at the time.

What followed Port Arthur was a major tightening of gun controls and the banning of the most dangerous firearms. When I moved to Australia, I was almost prosecuted for trying to import an airsoft gun, which my children had played with, quite safely, for a number of years.

You might think this is overkill. However, whilst Australia has experienced further multiple shootings, they have involved the deaths of far fewer people, simply by virtue of the nature of the non-automatic weapons involved.

As long as the NRA and impotent politicians hold sway in the US, such reform is unlikely to take place.

Maybe the US should just celebrate the good ole second amendment and further cement the right of its citizens to bear arms and to arm bears; but in doing so, what about a return to the guns that were around at the time of the second amendment?

After all, how many people would James Holmes have managed to kill, if he had been armed with a single shot, muzzle loading pistol and musket?

It's time for a rethink America.

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
