The Hundred Acre Wood- After dodging the issue for decades, childrens entertainers Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh announced on Wednesday that they are in fact in love and have been a couple for the last seventeen years. This announcement, posted on their official website, also stated that the couple plan to wed sometime in 2006.
"For obvious reasons, we chose to hide this for years," said Robin in the statement. "But the tides have turned and it seems that we live in a society that is very tolerant and understanding. We knew that this was the right time."
Robin and Pooh first gained national attention more than fifty years ago as one of the most famous and most marketed children's duo of all-time. Their tales and stories have sold millions and millions over the years and their popularity has never diminished.
Within hours of the announcement, the website was filled with postings from fans.
"I can't say I'm surprised. I'm not saying that I knew all along, but I always had an idea. And good for them! The important thing is that they are happy," says a fan known only as 'PoohBGirl88.'
Not all fans feel the same, however. "This is disgusting!" said 'PoohLuvr75.' "This is nothing but a publicity stunt. We all know that they have an upcoming world tour- their first in years. Coincidence? I doubt it!"
In a statement released Thursday, longtime friend and collaborator, Eeyore said that he was "thrilled for the two" and that "they deserve their happiness."
"I am so happy for them," said Eeyore in the statement. "And, as you know, I'm never happy about anything."
There is no word yet on an exact date of the couples nuptual. nor is there any information regarding the whereabouts of their wedding seeing as how The Hundred Acre Wood does not allow same-sex marriages.
"We are taking it one step at a time," said Pooh in the statement. "We are in love and proud of our relationship. That is all that matters. I will say this much- it would be a treat if we could get Kenny Loggins to sing 'House at Pooh Corner' during the ceremony."
Kenny Loggins could not be reached for a comment.
