image for Actors Unite To Oppose Cuts

Leading British actors have got together to protest against the latest round of Arts Council cuts.

Sir Patrick Stewart and Samuel West were amongst the large number of artists who handed a petition in to Downing Street requesting a summit of interested parties to produce a coherent Arts policy.

Stewart commented :

"We in the acting profession are gravely concerned about the effect the proposed 255 cut in funding will have on the future of our profession.

How will we be able to ensure that fresh blood continues to come through and bring life and vitality to the Arts ?

We are particularly worried that new actors will lose the tradition of referring to everyone as 'luvvies' and 'darlings'. This practice is one of the life bloods of the business and sets us apart from other professionals. It is the masonic handshake amongst actors".

Stewart and co are also concerned that pretending to kiss an acquaintance on each cheek or 'air kissing' may be another casualty of the expenditure cuts.

"Any dilution of this custom will surely toll the knell of our art.

We are facing the apocalypse".
