Popular BBC cookery show Saturday Kitchen ended in chaos today when punches were thrown as the final credits rolled.

The fracas broke out over the show's regular Omelette Challenge spot, during which the two guest chefs have to make an omelette against the clock.

Both today's guest chefs, Tristan Welch and Ken Hom, said they hated taking part in the item, and host, James Martin, quipped he hated it too as he had to taste the results.

But as Martin began introducing the next section of the show, raised voices could be heard off camera.

A show insider told us: "One of the producers shouted at Ken and Tristan - she wanted to know why they hated the challenge. 'You must be a pair of wusses,' she said.

"There was a bit of pushing and shoving while viewers were watching an archive film of Antonio Carluccio, but it had calmed down by the time the final item was airing - the celeb guest's Food Heaven or Hell slot.

"But while James and the guests were preparing the dish, more muttering could be heard off camera and as the final credits began to roll, one of the technical staff jumped into shot and threw a punch at Tristan - who showed a boxer's skill in avoiding it, by the way."

Apparently, the set descended into chaos as staff and guests tried to pull the antagonists apart.

A BBC spokesperson said: "Obviously we are dealing with some highly strung creative types on both sides of the camera in Saturday Kitchen, and passions run high over the competitive Omelette Challenge.

"There's clearly no chance of us dropping it now. This is great publicity."
