President Sarkozy meets another American.

There was an awkward moment at the Elysee Palace last week when Robert Redford was presented with the Legion d'Honeur.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy presented the Hollywood legend with France's most prestigious award and then whispered something in his ear.

He then seemed to become quite agitated as Redford shook his head and politely said: "Non, monsieur le president. Ce n'est pas moi!"

French aides quickly stepped in and smoothed things over and the two men were soon smiling and joking again.

Ever the diplomat, Redford refused to comment after the incident, but a source close to the President said: "The President has always been a fan of Sacha Distel, who of course had a hit with his version of Raindrops Are Falling On My Head, from the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

"The President suggested that Mr Redford might like to sing his version for the ceremony, as his wife would like to hear it. But Mr Redford pointed out that it wasn't he who sang the song in the movie.

"As a passionate Gallic man, the President thought Mr Redford had insulted him, but the misunderstanding was soon cleared up."

BJ Thomas sang the song on the Butch Cassidy soundtrack.
